While we are waiting for the last of the E3 conferences and probably Nintendo's mindrape with it's Wii U and a butt-ton of interesting games (fanboy spotted), let's make a short Musical Break about a soundtrack that I listen to most of my time that nearly nobody knows about.

http://cdn.steampowered.com/v/gfx/apps/35700/ss_a486ba52edc3b05ca0101c3dbf5d1469afc470aa.1920x1080.jpg?t=1333051239

Those effects *_*

I'm talking about Trine, a game that came out a few years ago on PC and PS3, where you play as three different, yet complementary heroes : a wizard, a thief, and a knight whose souls are linked to the mysterious artefact known as the Trine. The story is pretty straightforward : evil necromancer wants to conquer the world, go find him, smash his head with a mace, the end. No plot twists, that's basically it. You go through a few levels, smashing squelettons in the face. But it's charm lies within it's storybook-like narration and the dialogue between the characters, which can sometimes say some funny lines (though Trine 2 expands on that and makes it much better).

There are a few physics besed puzzles here and there, and we've got to switch between characters to advance in the game. It is also playable in co-op, which is much more fun.

To be honnest, Trine 1 isn't really that spectacular. Despite a few glitches here and there, it does it's job well. But the thing that really stood out for me was it's soundtrack, composed by Ari Pulkinnen, a composer whom very few know his name, but most of you might recognize his work (a few millions in fact) :

Indeed, Ari Pulkkinen is the composer of the Angry Birds soundtracks ! I've got to admit that I too was pretty surprised when I knew that ^^' He also composed music for games like Outland (which was pretty cool) and Super Stardust Delta (amazing soundtrack).

Time to talk about Trine's soundtrack : it is one of my favorite soundtracks of all time ! Something special surrounds it, a "je-ne-sais-quoi" that takes me everytime I listen to it. It is also a great soudtrack to listen to when you read books such as A Song of Ice and Fire or the Discworld series.

Nearly all of the tracks are calm and soothing, which is quite a break from what I might listen to. And if I have to choose between the soundtrack of Trine 1 or 2, I'd have to go with Trine 1's. It has a simplicity to it that the second one lost (which doesn't mean it's bad, on the contrary).

But there is a track on the first's soundtrack that breaks with the calm tones of the rest that is on my spotlight today : Tower of Sarek, the last level's track !

It is THE track that makes me want to stand up and invite a pretty lady to danse a medieval dance with me (yeah, I can have strange fantasies sometimes) ! It always gets me in a good mood and I sometimes put it on without even noticing it. I must have had listened to it more than 200 times already, and  still can't get enough of it ! Just relax, close your eyes, listen, and imagine you in the Middle Ages (without the gory Game of Thrones side of it).

Though I'll have to say the level that accompanies this track sucks and is quite frustrating...

Ari Pulkkinen's work is really good and deserves to be known to more souls (and that is one of the goals of my Musical Breaks).

On the next Musical Break, I'll be doing something a little bit …special #CrappyTeasing :p

For those of you who step into this blog for the first time, I welcome you, and hope you'll enjoy the raving banter that is about to come in a few lines.

Between the News of the Day and the other random posts that I write, I write about videogame music. I love listening to soundtracks (be it videogames or movies) and describing how I feel towards certain tracks, hence I'm doing these Musical Breaks.

But I need to warn you if you haven't discovered by now : I'm a French guy, and When I write English posts, it tends to be quite the mess, so bear with me if you see some mistakes. That said, let's begin the first Musical Break in English with an hommage to one of my favorite Japanese videogame music composer : Nobuo Uematsu and The Last Story !

The-Last-Story-logo.jpg

Why The Last Story and not a Final Fantasy game or Lost Odyssey or Blue Dragon or one of the many other soundtracks he composed ? Because this game is one of my favorites of the year so far, and it comes out next month in the US.

Before I go deeper in the soundtrack department, I'll talk a bit about the game. I picked it up in March and played it quite extensively for the first five hours, then stopped for a few days, because I was on a small trip into the French countryside. When i came back, I devoured it, finishing it in nearly 2 or 3 days, as I was having a lot of fun.

I liked the story, loved the characters and the feeling I was in a living and breathing group of mercenaries (the fact that there were also British voice actors ramped up the charm factor by a thousand in my opinion) and the gameplay was really fun, fast and engaging (removing all the tedium from leveling up, while still empowering you greatly when you can kill ennemies in a single move, when you were struggling to kill them only 10 minutes earlier), having some of the best boss fights in a while (though the last boss was a pain for taking a while to kill, and making me tense in the last form) and hurling banana skins at people to make them fall was pretty funny (being an prankster in games feels pretty good).

The-Last-Story-Stalker-Mode.jpg

Let's see… Who will be my next victim ? (insert maniacal laughter)

The writing was really good and I really liked the side-missions that can be quite rewarding plot-wise. BUT and that was my biggest problem with the game : it managed to put my Wii on it's knees, with ridiculous framerate drops and a few loadings here and there.

Otherwise, it didn't really have faults in my opinion (and it's not because people at Mistwalker (hello) are reading this that I say that, I really enjoyed it ^^). I liked it so much that I gladly hanged a poster on my "Door of favorite game that I managed to get a poster of" !

Last-Door-y.JPG

Though it is on the bottom half, since I still prefer Solatorobo for suuuper personnal reasons (and on the very top is an artwork from the Discworld series because it looks awesome) :p

And now, the soundtrack ! I really like Nobuo Uematsu's work, but how does The Last Story's soundtrack fare ?

Pretty good, but not my favorite (hint : it's from the 6th game of a series I love). More than half of the tracks, I enjoyed a lot, but some were a bit weak in my opinion, the Castle's themes come to mind.

Usually I do one track by Musical Break, as usually one track stands out of the lot, but here I'll talk about Three of them that I really enjoyed !

And I've got to say, Mr Uematsu did a fantastic job on most of the fight's musics for this game ! But from here, there might be SPOILERS (I'll still try to be elusive enough, but for those who don't want any details, you have been warned) !

The first that stood out for me is Invitation to Madness, used only once throughout the entire game, but man, what a moment it is !

Thanks to Pives, whom I know from a forum for uploading the track ! (shame about the drop in sound quality from time to time)

It really has a feeling I have quite a hard time to describe, but it suits really well the scene. As hinted by the title, you fught a mad man, and the rythm of the music kinda shows it, alternating between a kinda smooth rhythm and a quick one almost in every time ! It has a sort of split personnality, that goes along with the state of mind of the character, litterally freaking out in front of us. It is a really smartly written track, and I love the violin !

My only problem with this track is that the fight it goes with can be pretty short (I personnally could have destroyed the guy in 2 minutes tops, cutscenes included if not for the fact that I was circling around him just to listen to his crazy banter and listen more to the track in context ^^' (oh and it has a small God Hand feel, which i quite liked)

The second track is Dance of Death, a track once again used once during the entirety of the game, and really close to the final boss (speaking of the final boss, I'll say right off the bat that I didn't really enjoy his track as much for the simple fact of the screeching noises in the background, that really made me think "is that a pterodactyl !?" The rest of the track is pretty cool, but the sound kinda weakened the replayability of it for my poor ears ^^')

Dance of Death is more the case of the badass theme I can listen to without the need of the context. To be honnest, I didn't think it mixed well with the fight, but it still managed to set me in the mood for hitting on stuff with my stick of death !

It also really has a Black Mages feel that I loved listening to, so that is a huge plus in my book. And heck, it is just plain awesome to listen to, so enjoy !

And finally the third track is the Arena's theme, which is a reaaaally cool one !

Saying I went to the arena just to listen to it is kinda true ! I really love this track, it remainds me a bit of Final Fantasy 9's soundtrack mixed with a Zorro soundtrack. Stepping into the arena to dance with swords in a magnificent ballet.

Also, the commentators were pretty funny, which contributed to a quite light tone. The Arena is a distraction and this track really reflects this fact : we are here to have fun, even if it can be a bit dangerous ! Let's kill some monsters and then to the pub !

Speaking of the pub, i could have talked about it's track that i really liked, or the final trial's which really made me feel like a hero, but the the article would be a bit too long, and it would defeat the purpose of the Musical Break ^^'

And that's The Last Story's soundtrack in a nutshell : a really fine piece of work coming from Mr Uematsu that really should be listened to. There are a few weaker track, but it really is a good one !

The game comes out in the US the 10th of July and you really should be picking it up. As for the European readers that didn't get it already, you know what to do ;)

Next time (the new one that will not be a translated version of a MB I already wrote in French), I'll be talking of another magical land, but from Finland…

CRedit is a series of articles which I've found the title 3 weeks a go, but was never used for the simple yet truthful reason that I didn't have a single clue about what I was going to write in.And now I know : I'll write about games I liked (or not), simple, like a quarter you'd put in a souvenir making machine !

And today I'll write about Smurf's Nightmare, a Game Boy/ Game Boy Color game that came out in 1999. I've talked about it last Wednesday in "la Case du Geek" on Fréquence Geek, a French webradio, where I talk to people about videogames.

Two weeks ago, I've talked about dreams with Klonoa Door to Phantomile and last week I've talked about the possible feeling of taking drugs with Rhythm Tengoku (I'll probably rewrite them in the near future if I'm not too lazy). This week, I'll take you to the land of Nightmares with Smurf's Nightmare *insert diabolical laughter*

Le-Cauchemar-des-Schtroumpfs.jpg The Infogrames logo ! THE INFOGRAMES LOGO !! AAAHHHH !!!*

*This state of mind refers to the Joueur du Grenier, a quite famous French internet reviewer (and French Angry Video Game Nerd to make a quick comparison), who got traumatised by the Infogrames games, which are considered to be horrible games based off of famous french and belgian comic books.

Before we begin, just forget about the movie that came last year, just forget about it ! It was a horrible piece of work that totally raped the spirit of the comic book ! The original Smurfs is a classic, that provides fun stories for youngsters and it was pretty good. FORGET THE MOVIE ! Now that it's done, let's begin shall we ?

The evil wizard Gargamel has cast an evil spell on the whole Smurf village that makes the Smurfs prisonners of their own nightmares. We play with the Hefty Smurf, who hasn't been cursed for mysterious reasons, that we'll learn about during a really complex story, full of surprising twists…

Ok, I'm just kidding : he  just went out for a stroll and came back not knowing what happened. And he now has to deliver the whole village ! Yes, all 6 of them !

Le-Cauchemar-des-Schtroumpfs-2.jpgOh yeah, doin' nothing is what made me win…the right to save everyone ! D'oh !

Something gets me though : haw could Gargamel curse the village if he doesn't have the slightest clue where it is ? And how can the Hefty Smurf invade the other Smurf's nightmares without any spell, nor Inception machine ? Is he a Psychonaut ? And why am I questionning the logic of an old Game Boy game that really hasn't got any story to speak of ?

http://img.gamefaqs.net/screens/5/4/7/gfs_42920_1_3.jpgHere is one of the 6 lines explaining the story of the game. Litterally 6 lines throughout the WHOLE game !

We need to go through 6 worlds (hell's kitchen, the haunted library, the mysterious planet, the hauted mansion, the malevolent workbench and the classic evil scientists lab) in order to break the spell. Each world is divided in 2 levels and potentially 2 bonus levels where you have to hit boxes to win more lives and avoid bombs laid everywhere by the Jokey Smurf. As a matter of fact, nearly half of the entierety of the boxes are trapped thanks to that douche ! In the end, you'll hate his stupid little grin !

The 2 main levels follow the same plan : the first one introduces us to the theme of the world and is relatively simple in the obstacles (walking sausages for example… no I'm not inventing this, it's real ! THE SAUSAGES ARE REAL !!), and the second one goes further in the trappings related to the theme (killer forks, killer bottles of ink, screwing screws, etc). It also progressively introduces us to cheap traps, such as leaps of faith, ennemies spawning on your face and moving platforms.

One of the most interesting gameplay mecanics of the game comes with the sarsaparilla leaves : in every level, there are tons of leaves scattered kinda everywhere. Each time you grab one, a meter fills up and each time the meter gets filled to a third, the Hefty Smurf will be able to perform a double jump (and then a triple jump once it's two thirds full). Being able to jump higher nets you the right to advance in some of the levels and complete them. This also means you've got to grab every single leaf you find to avoid some backtracking (personally, I didn't need to do some since it's quite easy to find enough of them).

http://img.gamefaqs.net/screens/a/3/7/gfs_42920_1_6.jpgIt sounds like the beggining of a joke…

Once you complete a world, you'll have to complete a special level (mostly time-restraint levels) to grab the key to the next world. They can be pretty stressful and you'll need good reflexes to get past them, more than in the normal levels. There's a race on the back of a hare and a mole where you need to avoid spikes and holes (insert sex joke here) and jump with precision. There is a water level (start to cringe right now), where you'll need to grab bubbles for air and avoid some (too) well placed ennemies. And in the barrage level, you'll need to avoid being hit by a huge wave that can sometimes take more than half of the screen, so you'll see nearly nothing (that, is a cheap shot !).

Overall the difficulty is quite strange : the first 3 worlds are easy as pie, and the 3 last are irritatingly cheap, with a lot of cheap traps. Oh and there is no checkpoint, so you die, you restart the level from the beggining ! So the game's length artificially increases, but if you manage quite well, it takes more or less 2 hours to finish the game. It is a pretty decent length for a Game Boy Game without save points (but when you consider the price back then, you'd need to be quite the bad player to not feel cheated).

As far as the graphics goes, it is pretty and respects the style of the comic book. But the point that really surprised me is the music : composed by Alberto Jose González, they deserve that you listen to at least one of them. And since I'm quite the generous guy, here is the best track of the game :

Pure nostalgia bliss...

It was the first game that accompanied my Game boy Color (for the fact we didn't know it was GBC only, my father felt forced to buy the console, which was a good thing in retrospect if we consider the fact it used less batteries).

And did you know the game was entirely developped by 2 people, and the whole team was composed of 7 people ? Quite impressive in my book.

So overall, I find it is an enjoyable title, despite it's irritating difficulty, it deserves a bit of attention. So if one day you find it in a car boot, you know what you'll have to do ;) And now, I'll go to sleep, I hope I won't do any smurfing nightmare !

Today is such a mess news-wise ! It's the beggining of the E3 Madness, so the news comes out at an alarming pace !

Will I talk about Gametrailers releasing all the trailers before the conferences thus spoiling us what little surprise we could have had during the event, with trailers such as Tomb Raider's, Catlevania Lords of Shadow 2 or Metal Gear Rising Revengeance ? Konami's Presentation of Zone of the Enders HD containing a demo of Revengeance and Castlevania LoSMoF having a trailer during Nintendo's conference ? Or the revival of the Alexandra Lederman and Imagine series on the 3DS ?

No, I'll be writing about the new Humble Indie Bundle, which goes with this 5th main Bundle once again in the Oh My God I Want This territory in my Need-o-Meter !

Humble-Indie-Bundle.jpg

And this time, they bring the big guns :

Psychonauts

Amnesia : The Dark Descent

Limbo

Sword and Sworcery

And Bastion if you pay more than the average, which is pretty high ($7,60) compared to the usual $5, which shows the care gamers have with this Bundle and their generosity !And they are pretty generous : in less than 24 hours, we are already near the 250 000 Bundles sold and the $2 MILLION harvested for charity/devs !

Oh and did I say that you also get all of the games' soundtracks ? It's preeetty cool !

And as usual, a cool video comes with the Bundle, and this one is 20% cooler :

Here is the usual adress so you can make a generous offer !

Never have I had to write a news that quickly. I had more or less 7 minutes to write it, so the text was quite the challenge to write !

Little King's Story was a game I really enjoyed on the Wii when it came out, and when I learned there was to be a sequel on the PS Vita, I was sold on the console… And then I saw the new design. And cried.

http://i.ytimg.com/vi/JBZl8_qx_H0/0.jpg

Oh God my eyes ! Howzer, what did they DO to you !? *sobs*

The dictatorship simulation went from a cutesy and colorful design to something a bit darker and "more adult" with a quite average manga style that conflicts with the previous one.

I can at least force myself to like it, because the gameplay on the Vita looks fantastic, with the touch based control scheme, which is much more precise than the Wii's.

I can like it… if it does come out in Europe, since it releases only digitally in the US by the year's end. There is hope still, since all you need is transfer the data from the american servers to the european one, rate it, put a pric tag on it and Bam ! I can spill my subjects guts and mix it to the Oni's for my grand pleasure ! No real risk for Konami !

Here's a video for your viewing pleasure :

I really hope it comes out in Europe ! Written in 9 minutes, I'm that good !

Weee !

I've got quite the peculiar relationship with the Ratchet and Clank series : I love the setting, I love th characters, I love the humour, I like the gameplay…Buuut I've never even finished a single game ! Yeah I know I suck, but let's say that every time I can get my hands on an episode, it strangely disappears.

And when Insomniac announces a new episode coming out by the year's end on the PSN, I'm happy. I'm happy for the simple reason that it will be a downloadable game, so I can't lose it or see it vanish when I start it… except if I lose my PS3 or I play something else and forget it, kinda like my games on Steam, whare I've finished like…5 games out of 85 ^^'

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7215/7298432076_f4dd8f672b_z.jpg

So yeah, Ratchet and Clank Full Frontal Assault is a special episode that comes back to the roots of the series in tone, that will still try to offer a new twist on the gameplay. There will also be a multiplayer aspect, though the details are too few to continue writing about it. Anyway a new Ratchet and Clank game is sufficient to make me happy.

If there's something cool about the Internet, it's that the information goes reaaally fast. It is kinda like the series Early Edition, since we've got the magazine shown days before it's supposed to come out !

It's like… We can see the futur on the Internet…Trippy !

So yeah, we already have some scans of the new Nintendo Power from Neogaf, which should come out a few days after Nintendo's E3 conference (or something like that I guess). It already shows the new Castlevania game called Mirror of Fate, which takes place during the same period as Lords of Shadow.

castlevania-Mirrors-of-Fate-Artwork.png

It's pretty !

We play as Trevor Belmont, another member of the Brotherhood (and probably a son/cousin/brother of Gabriel's, take a pick). The game looks pretty similar to LoS, since the battle system is similar, with dark and light magic, tons of combos and beating monsters with a Combat cross. However, the thing we don't know is if the gameplay is mostly 2D (with 3D shots, as seen on the screens below) or movement in a 3D space.

All we have is 2 crappy screenshots taken from the magazine (but seen from a distance, it looks pretty badass) :

castlevania-Mirrors-of-Fate-Screens.png

Looks nice for a handheld such as the 3DS, with killer lighting effects. But I guess we'll have to wait Nintendo's E3 conference in less than a week to see it in movement and where we'll have to fake our enthusiasm for a game we now know of !

I tried to play Lords of Shadow on the PS3, but I got quite bored with it pretty quick (I felt more like a tourist than a hero). Maybe this one will fare better with my slightly short span of attention ^^

Note : NotD means News of the Day. I've been doing these articles for a bit more than a week in the French version and each day, I select a piece o' news that I liked and put my grain of salt (or slobber) on it.

Well will you look at that ! This Monday (a special Monday in France since it's the Pentecôte, which means Nationnal Hollyday, i.e a slacking day) is as empty news-wise as my elections program. So either I was talking about Wrath of the Lamb, the Binding of Isaac's new extention or Gravity Rush's demo, and since I never even touched the first case (even though I own the game since nearly Day one… Yes, boo me), and the second case piked my interest long ago, I've decided to talk about that instead.

Well, I'll be really quick about that one : the demo comes out Wednesday in Europe and tomorrow in the US ! There, done ^^

…Okay, I'll elaborate : Gravity Rush has interested me for quite a while now as it is the game that made me buy a PS Vita (it has to run from time to time) ! I've got to say, the game looks beautiful, the art design really gets me and the gameplay looks fun as hell. Also, the music are composed by Kouhei Tanaka, who wrote music for the One Piece animated series, and since this one is really great, I figure GR's probably is great too.

And as a matter of fact, I've got an extract from the soundtrack to share ! Enjoy :

Admit it ! It really is awesome !

Anywho, the demo comes out in 2 days, the full game in 2 weeks (more or less) and I'm excited as hell, even after having read Jim Sterling's opinion of it on Destructoid, where he seems a bit disappointed.

Two days to go !
